The New York Public Library - Bloomingdale Branch, NYC

Little Apple Heroes gathered at the NY Public Library to create holiday treats for the pediatric wards at the neighboring St. Luke's Roosevelt and Metropolitan Hospitals. The afternoon started with a special appearance. Alex Etel, the star of the film "The Water Horse" stopped by the uptown branch to read excerpts of the book of the same title. Alex then helped the kids put their artistic talents to work. They crafted "The Water Horse" holiday greeting cards and gift bags filled with books, toys and t-shirts from the film. The patients cherished the gifts and the generosity of the Little Apple Heroes.

The true meaning of Thanksgiving was shown by the hard work of our Little Apple Heroes. They collected and packaged prepared holiday food for the many families who reside in the Bailey-Holt House supportive housing program. Thanks to the kids' participation, families in need were provided with food for a festive Thanksgiving meal.

Spider-Man and director, Sam Raimi, announced the release of Spider-Man 3 on DVD to a crowd of fans in the heart of Times Square. Spidey made sure that the Little Apple Heroes were on stage to share in the spotlight. Sam acknowledged the kids and the value of the volunteer efforts of the program. In addition, the kids distributed Spider-Man 3 DVDs and special Papa John's superhero pizzas to the other local heroes - the police and firefighters of the NY area. They felt proud to be Little Apple Heroes.

From the hustle to hip hop, our Little Apple Heroes joined the residents of the Central Harlem Senior Center for an afternoon of dance. The kids gave the seniors pointers on the newest dance moves while the seniors showed the kids some of their own classic steps. They all had a memorable time and plan to get together again to dance the night away.

"Surf's Up!" exclaimed the Little Apple Heroes on a beautiful Saturday in Far Rockaway at the Mayor's Office Surf's Up Beach Clean-Up. The kids were instrumental in helping to paint, plant and overall make the grounds of Beach 29th Street to Beach 32nd Street safe and clean for the start of a fun-filled summer.

To close "Spider-Man Week in NYC" with a big bang, the Little Apple Heroes took the five boroughs by storm on Saturday, May 5th - "Little Apple Heroes Day 2007." On that Saturday, local youth groups were hard at work doing clean up and gardening projects all throughout the city. The bright sunshine and warm weather provided a great day for "polishing the Big Apple" and by the end of the day, not only did each borough benefit from the beautification projects, but over 150 youths were added to our growing numbers of Little Apple Hero volunteers.

The Little Apple Heroes cleaned up the field around the Bronx River Arts Center. They continued their productive activities by planting in the neighboring Drew Gardens. All the effort the kids put into this community project made for a rewarding day.

At Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park, the Little Apple Heroes worked to revamp the common grounds. They planted flowers in the playground and even in the barbeque area. These volunteers helped to make the park a pleasant place to spend an afternoon.

Our Little Apple Heroes made Clove Lake Park spotless. They cleaned, potted new plants and even planned to return to skim the pond. The members of parks department were very impressed with the job these kids did for their community.

The Little Apple Heroes had the pleasure of treating the patients at Columbia Presbyterian Children's Hospital to a special showing of Spider-Man 3. These kids, who were unable to see the film in theaters, got the opportunity to enjoy the latest web-slinging adventures of Spider-man in the hospital's screening room while munching on delicious Spidey snacks.

Spider-Man swung into NYC and stopped by the pediatric wards of five hospitals. The kids were beaming with anticipation as Spider-Man greeted them with his famous moves. He personally delivered Spider-Man 3 goodies to each child and stayed a while to take pictures with them. His Spidey senses told him that his visit really brightened their day.

To kick-off "Spider-Man Week in NYC," the cast of Spider-Man 3 made a special appearance on NBC's Today Show, along with Mayor Bloomberg and a group of Little Apple Heroes. After proclaiming it "Spider-Man Week in NYC," the Mayor spoke about the Little Apple Heroes and all the great work they do throughout the city to volunteer and become "heroes" in their own communities. Tobey Maguire continued the praise for the Little Apple Heroes during his own interview later in the show.

Despite the snow and the cold, our Little Apple Heroes from PS 206 in East Harlem made Valentine's Day a very special day for patients at North Harlem Hospital. The children put together care packages for elderly patients that included lotions, shawls, towels and signed Valentine's Day cards. The Little Apple Heroes then visited each patient to deliver these gifts and spent some time visiting with them. It was a heart-warming afternoon for all.

Giving and Getting for the Holidays. Young students from PS 1 in Manhattan's Chinatown neighborhood got to celebrate the holidays by doing some good! These Little Apple Heroes spent several hours after school going around "service stations." Students made scarves for homeless and elderly, decorated care kits, wrote holiday cards and created photo frames for themselves with illustrations of the heroes in their lives. These Little Apple Heroes learned valuable lessons and gave back to their communities during the holiday season.

Many senior citizens from East Harlem's Corsi Senior Center were treated to a festive Thanksgiving afternoon - thanks to efforts of the Little Apple Heroes. Their dining hall was transformed into a holiday feast by the Little Apple Heroes. The kids decorated the room, set up the tables and place settings and also managed to create a system to serve over 100 guests in less than 30 minutes. These amazing Little Apple Heroes focused on cultivating leadership skills through service and put a smile on all who attended that day.

Hundreds of Little Apple Heroes from across the city came to Stuyvesant High School for a special screening of ZATHURA. The story of two brothers who worked together to make their way through the game ZATHURA inspired our Little Apple Heroes to work together and bring joy into people's lives. The screening was followed by a Helping Hands Halloween party. In addition to fun Halloween activities, the kids created holiday cards for the elderly, painted murals for schools and decorated paper bags for God's Love We Deliver.

Kids at Columbia Presbyterian Children's Hospital got a surprise visit from Spider-Man. Spider-Man entertained children in the "Wintergarden" with a sneak peek of the Spider-Man 2 DVD. Spider-Man then swung his way over to visit children who couldn't leave their beds with big baskets of Spidey treats.

Little Apple Heroes showed their holiday spirit by visiting Peter's Place, the city's only 24-hour, multi-service center for homeless senior citizens. The children brought and served a traditional Thanksgiving meal. After sharing the meal, the kids then spent the afternoon entertaining the residents and distributing gifts.

Little Apple Heroes wanted to bring joy to children in the pediatric ward at Columbia Presbyterian Children's Hospital who were unable see their superhero in action at the movies. So the Little Apple Heroes brought the screen to them with a special showing of Spider-Man 2. The children got to spend an afternoon "at the movies" complete with fun snacks and popcorn.

The Little Apple Heroes were selected from among hundreds of children's entries in a contest in the NY Post. The contest encouraged children to think like heroes and develop plans to improve their communities through volunteerism. One winner was selected from each borough. These five Little Apple Heroes had their plans of action realized on Saturday, June 26, 2004, when they teamed with their family, friends and a volunteer task force from the Mayor's Volunteer Center to implement their projects.

Thadius Regisford worked with his mom to make home cooked meals which he then served to homeless clients at the Open Door Church of God in Brooklyn. Thadius and his mom continue to visit and cook for the clients at the church.

Concerned about the fact her brother's artwork could not be shown, Gabriele Dileone and the Little Apple Heroes team put up corkboards in the hallways of PS 37 - a school dedicated to helping autistic children. Now the hallways are lit up by the beautiful artwork on display.
